Cult – The Strange Toilet Paper Master

Bizarre purification at a bubble tea shop

I was so happy after finishing the last article about cults that someone even said I could go write novels. But I know I’m the king of three-minute passions, so I just write for fun. However, in line with my Leo’s dramatic flair and vanity, I’m writing another piece. I don’t know if this counts as a cult or what, but it’s another strange and somewhat chaotic experience.

About eight or nine years ago, a very elegant and beautiful woman often came to my studio on Yijiang Street in the afternoons. She would occasionally get a Tarot reading, do some meditation, Reiki, or whatnot. Since we were around the same age, we quickly became good friends. Later, the studio on Yijiang Street closed, and we lost touch for a while. One day, she suddenly pinged me on MSN, saying she wanted to introduce someone special to me. It was a new master she had started following, who she said was very powerful. She wanted to recommend him to me, and then she added her master to my MSN.

We said hello online. I was very curious at the time because she had introduced me to a super-magical person before (I’ll write about that another time). So, I decided to do a remote energy reading via MSN to get a sneak peek at what kind of hero this master was. Unexpectedly, the other party immediately sent a message: “Hey, don’t do that! Trying to sneak a look at my condition over the internet… Let’s just meet in person later. You’re making me very uncomfortable!”

Busted! How unlucky. My little trick was exposed immediately, so I had to pull back and be good. We arranged to meet in the afternoon. The master insisted on treating me to a meal, probably for some reason like “cultivators can’t casually accept favors from others,” but he didn’t want to split the bill. Fortunately, since I’m just an ordinary person, I happily agreed.

Later, the three of us met at a bubble tea shop near the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in the East District. When I met him, I saw he was a young man in his twenties or thirties, dressed like an office worker. I ordered a cup of tea and then complained to the young master: “Master, you’re no fun. You said you’d treat me, but you scheduled it for 2 PM, so I had to eat first and can only drink tea now.”

The master was very polite and said, “Sorry, sorry, work has been busy, so I’m only just getting to eat now.”

Then he began to introduce himself. First, he told me not to be fooled by his youthful appearance; he was, in fact, the head of the XX Temple, and the XX Temple was the big boss behind the DD Temple and the CC Temple. My next question was: “And DD Temple and CC Temple are…?”

He told me those temples were very, very high-level temples, and the temple he presided over was even higher. So my second question was: “How come I’ve never heard of it?”

He told me to ignore those details for now; in short, I just needed to understand that his status in the spiritual cultivation world was very high. And since I really didn’t know anything about those temples, I just decided to believe him for the time being that he was a person of high status.

But this wasn’t particularly special; many people introduce themselves this way, claiming their cultivation is very, very high. What was special was that this master carried a large bag of toilet paper with him. After every few sentences, he would spit a mouthful of white phlegm onto a piece of toilet paper. By the time he finished his introduction, the pile of used toilet paper was as large as a regular grocery bag. Midway through, the bag got full, and my friend even had to go ask the shop for a new one.

I couldn’t help but feel concerned. “Master,” I asked, “do you have a cold? What’s going on?”

The young master, looking dizzy from all the spitting, replied: “I am purifying and clearing spirits for you. Your energy is very toxic. Every time I do a purification, I spit out white phlegm.”

I was astonished. Looking at the mountain of toilet paper on the table, I was very worried if he was dehydrated or malnourished. He was tall and thin, and while not exactly frail, the whole scene looked really bad. So I asked again, “Master, this purification method seems very harmful to your body! Can’t you use another way?”

The Toilet Paper Master’s breathing was chaotic. He could barely catch his breath and was almost slumped over the table. He said, “I can’t help it. You are just too toxic. But this is service; it always requires sacrifice.”

He sighed. I became genuinely worried. “Master, I think you should go to a hospital for a check-up. This isn’t good.”

The young Toilet Paper Master looked troubled and said, “It’s… it’s really not that.”

Then he started to look at me with an even more pleasant expression. “Very good, very good. You have cultivated well, your level is high, but you are just one step away from a breakthrough. How about this: I’ll help you.”

I looked at him suspiciously, starting to feel annoyed. He meant that I had cultivated very high, but still needed his help, which meant his cultivation was even higher… right?

Then I asked him, “How are you going to help?”

The Toilet Paper Master showed a faint, self-satisfied smile and said, “I have many ‘heavenly mandates’ (destinies). When I see someone has a problem, I help them immediately, even if they are a stranger. As long as I feel it, I just do it, give them some advice. And I have to go to my office job, so I’m very busy, very tired every day.”

I was shocked. “You just randomly sense people have problems, and you go up and talk to them, even if you don’t know them?”

The Toilet Paper Master said, “Yes.”

I was truly frightened. “Wouldn’t people think you’re crazy?”

He said, “Yes. I don’t care. This is my heavenly mandate.”

Oh my god! I couldn’t help but think, “This is bad! This person is seriously ill.”

Then he continued, “I have another heavenly mandate, which is to find spirit guides for people.”

As soon as I heard that, I knew something was wrong. But I was stunned for a moment, not knowing how to switch from a respectful attitude to slamming the table and yelling at him. I was frozen and couldn’t speak.

I just heard him say with a smug look, “Look at you. Even though you’re not young, your personality is still like a child’s. I think I’ll just…”

The dark masses attacking

And at that exact moment, I suddenly sensed two dark, black masses appearing to my right, approaching me quickly.

I started to yell angrily, “What are you doing! What are those things? Get them away! Scram! I am fine being with myself. Don’t you dare try to attach anything to me! Call those two things off!”

After I yelled, I just remember being incredibly angry. My whole body felt like it was expanding with rage. The young Toilet Paper Master’s condition suddenly seemed to deteriorate. His whole body bent over, and he was spitting white phlegm so violently it almost looked like he was foaming at the mouth. He couldn’t answer me at all. Then the woman who brought me there also ran to the bathroom and vomited for a long time. And just like that, the “finding a spirit guide” business suddenly stopped, before I even knew what was going on. (I still don’t know what happened to that master and his disciple.)

When they had both more or less calmed down from their vomiting, and I was less agitated, the Toilet Paper Master maintained his polite smile and whispered to me, “My goodness! The energy on you is truly toxic.”

Then he quickly said his goodbyes. Unfortunately, we had to leave in the same direction, so we had to leave the tea shop together. On the walk to the MRT station, he kept repeating the same thing over and over: “You are too toxic,” while spitting white phlegm as he walked.

I couldn’t bear to watch. I urged him out of concern, “Looking at your physical condition… you really should see a doctor! Please take good care of yourself. I’ll be going now! Goodbye!”

After I got home, the beautiful woman pinged me on MSN again. “What just happened? Why did I suddenly get dizzy and go throw up? Did something happen? My master said you’re the reason I went to the bathroom to vomit.” At that moment, I felt like this was just a “he said, she said” situation. I had no idea what was wrong with them. So, I just blocked them both on MSN.

Sigh… that was the Toilet Paper Master incident, which I don’t know if I should classify as a cult or what. It was just too chaotic. Please! I hope no more “masters” like this ever show up again. I’m actually quite well-behaved and nice. Don’t come looking for me with this nonsense. I wish everyone peace and good fortune.

Excerpts from FB Responses

LL: The dark gray gas cloud~

KARA: That part is a little scary!

LL: It was mentioned in Chang Kuo-Sung’s book.

LL: So that stuff really exists. And you can see it, you’re too strong. Good thing you got angry and scared it away.

KARA: Oh! He saw those two masses? I thought everyone saw things differently, curious! What did he say about them?

KARA: Ah! I looked it up, the content of his books isn’t my cup of tea.

—-Excerpt from Chang Kuo-Sung’s book————-

Zhong Kui: “Humans have magnetic flow all over their bodies. As long as body heat is emitted, evil spirits will want to get close and absorb it; this is especially true for female menstrual blood, which is warm, so evil spirits won’t pass it up. The ‘dark gray gas clouds’ and ‘liar ghosts’ follow the scent on the air currents. [People who voluntarily interact with the netherworld] are in trouble; the bloody magnetic flow carries a bloody aura, which is even more attractive to evil spirits. This is why there’s a folk saying that ‘women on their period cannot enter temples.’ The real reason is [if a menstruating woman enters a temple, the deities (evil spirits) in the temple will be drawn by the scent of the bloody aura. The evil spirits all come to suck this easily-obtained magnetic flow, which carries a bloody aura. Then, there will be no ‘dark gray gas clouds’ (evil spirits) left to possess the spirit medium (Jitong), allowing them to channel the deity and display their divine power to the worshippers—that’s why women on their period are forbidden from temples].”

KARA: This?

KARA: That was a close call~ Someone actually wrote about this.

LL: Mhmm, yes. I originally just read it as a book, I didn’t expect you to actually see it.

KARA: I don’t know, it was just dark, like a big, rough ball of yarn, and it flew over very quickly.

KARA: But the content he writes is really hard for me to understand. It’s like language from a different era, a bit difficult to read.

LL: He says they gather in masses, or mix in with swarms of mosquitoes. I don’t really get it either, but I just read it and try to understand his logic.

KARA: Mmm, really not easy to understand.

LL: (This is an excerpt from the book) Humans are born with the ‘responsibility of improving society through their roles in all walks of life and their duties.’ This responsibility exists until death. During this life, various life difficulties and interpersonal setbacks are all tests for humanity, and how one responds is the key to polishing the wisdom of the soul root.

However, the ‘Wind and Cloud Taoists’ of the ‘Wind and Cloud Spirit Realm,’ when managing humanity, will indeed provide timely assistance—the iron rule humans must remember is: [Do not seek divine help or attempt to get invisible assistance]. This mentality is very dangerous and easily exploited by evil spirits from the netherworld. On the contrary, evil spirits will meddle and destroy, making the human situation worse, with more setbacks, leading people to rely on religion and divine help. Humans only need to adhere to the correct principle of breaking free: [Rely on one’s own human effort], follow the principles of “all walks of life” and “fulfilling one’s duties.” As long as one is “willing to work hard and use their brain to ‘do’,” the surrounding spirits and Wind and Cloud Taoists will naturally guide opportunities to appear. This is “heaven never seals all roads.” (Those who are lazy and want to reap without sowing will absolutely not get a chance.)

LL: ▲ Today, humanity is misled by [religious] culture. Clearly, it is through “one’s own wisdom and hard work” that results are achieved, yet they are attributed to gods—people insist on going to temples to worship gods, make offerings to statues, and borrow the formless power of religion, thinking gods will protect their efforts from being in vain. Unwittingly, they thus ‘interact with the netherworld,’ becoming food for evil spirits (supplying human magnetic flow to them), and attribute the success and wealth they earned through hard work to evil spirits. What’s especially terrifying is: “Evil spirits (deities) will absolutely not help humans! They will only meddle and destroy in human lives, causing problems for your successful business, making your hard-earned rewards disappear; and they seriously harm human health, causing health problems for successful people (or problems for their families).” All this is done by evil spirits to make humans more reliant on divine help (interacting with the netherworld), trapping them in a never-ending vicious cycle.

If you die from being unable to handle setbacks (or from cancer), it’s the evil spirits “claiming a substitute” (the dead human reincarnates as a small shrimp)—the evil spirits’ game of toying with humans isn’t over—it will also bring disaster to future generations! The descendants continue the elders’ custom of worshipping deities, and so the family’s misfortune is passed down from generation to generation, which ignorant humans comfort themselves by calling “karma.”

This is a portrait of how evil spirits disrupt humanity.

KARA: I feel, some of it might be like this, but some might not be~ But there is a saying, “Pray to gods, and ghosts will arrive.” I feel that when worshipping, one shouldn’t overthink it. Just be sincere, respectful, and grateful. Because this world is vast, and there’s a lot we can’t fully know. And he refers to evil spirits, but surely not all of them are bad!?

LL: I don’t know, I can’t fully digest it either.

KARA: It’s really not easy to understand~

YY: I’ve heard of exchanging spirit guides.
Spirit entities that can be traded and exchanged
are never good things.
I have a friend who was “given” something like
Fu Xi, Nüwa, the nine-tailed fox spirit Daji

(The spirit entity gives a false image
to make people mistake
its identity as noble)
…and so on, and as a result
his business was good for a short time
but his health got worse and worse…

The spirit entity channeled by a medium
is not necessarily an evil spirit.

KARA: I’ve only seen “exchanging spirit guides” in comics, usually depicted as demons, never seen a Chinese version.

It’s actually very hard to distinguish if they are evil spirits. Some mediums’ energy is black before they work, but after they channel, they seem to be full of golden light, love, and light.
I feel that with human limitations, it’s impossible to fully understand the whole picture. The best way is to be as respectful as possible, and then leave. Those worlds we cannot know are usually one illusion after another. Many people think they know, or have researched a lot, but illusions are like that: they can be endless, they can satisfy all kinds of desires, whether for curiosity, knowledge, or help… The content inside is like a black hole full of candy, with no truth in it.

And there will always be phenomena around us. Sometimes, understanding the surface is enough. The more you want to understand, the more you attract them. Their world is actually not more interesting than reality and love.
