Rider-Waite (Primary): The Process of Experience / Zen Tarot (Auxiliary): Guidance for the Soul
Three of Swords
This card is the “Actual Display” of your current situation. “The Three of Swords” in Rider-Waite is the most direct depiction of “Heartbreak” and “Pain.” A bright red heart is ruthlessly pierced by three swords, set against a gloomy, rainy sky. On a practical level, this indicates you are going through a period of intense pain: perhaps a breakup, betrayal, loss, or receiving news that cuts like a knife. This is an emotional impact that cannot be ignored.

Zen Observation: Three of Swords
Three swords piercing a heart—this is perhaps the most visceral and feared image in the Tarot. Yet, through the lens of Zen, pain is not a punishment, but a potent fuel for awakening. The Three of Swords represents the inevitable sorrows, separations, and losses that accompany the human experience.
Much of our suffering arises not from the event itself, but from our resistance to it. We tell ourselves, “I shouldn’t be hurting,” or “This isn’t fair.” This friction between reality and our expectations is the true root of suffering. This card invites you to practice “radical acceptance.” Imagine sorrow as a heavy rainstorm. You do not need to run screaming through the rain, nor try to command the clouds to disperse. You simply need to stand there, let the rain soak you to the bone, and acknowledge the reality of the pain.
This is the birthplace of compassion. When the heart breaks, the rigid shell of the ego cracks open, allowing light to penetrate the deepest, darkest corners of your being. You will find that your wounded self is connected to every other suffering soul in the world. Do not rush to heal; do not force yourself to “get over it.” Just breathe into the discomfort. You will discover that pain is just pain—it arises like clouds and will eventually dissolve like clouds. Accept it, pass through it, and you will emerge with a heart that is softer, wider, and infinitely more resilient.
