Reflections on Taiwanese Psychic Phenomena

To be blunt, I have had many bizarre “psychics” (Tōnglíng Zhě) and “sensitives” (Língtōng Zhě) around me. My evaluation of such individuals is mixed; they each have their good and bad sides. After all, whether one is psychic or not, the most important thing is that they are still human. All human virtues manifest in them, and likewise, all human flaws.

Supernatural Phenomena or Spiritual Science?

Interestingly, in 2007, I had the opportunity to participate in a Tibetan Heart Yoga event at a Tibetan Buddhist center. In one unit of the activity, we had to exchange our favorite books with others to read, hoping to broaden our perspectives. I was lucky enough to receive a book written by a famous figure in the psychic world. As someone who had always prided myself on having some research into psychic and sensitive phenomena, I was really not interested in such a book. But at the yoga teacher’s earnest request, I had to start reading this book I usually had no interest in.

Opening the book and reading it carefully, I thought about some of the psychic figures in Taiwan. It seems they treat their supernatural phenomena as if they were mysterious, unfathomable treasures, holding them close and selling them. They lack a spirit of exploration into the mystical realm. They use a limited perspective to deconstruct many specious phenomena, instead of applying them to the inquiry of spiritual science. This is not only a great pity but also defames the original purpose of psychic ability, which is to expand the human field of vision. It also misses the possibility of a deeper inquiry into the universe and life. It’s truly a shame.

In fact, there are very many people with strong psychic abilities. However, these individuals almost always go on to explore the life phenomena of the universe more deeply, or enter more religious studies to develop their personal wisdom, rather than just using such a worldly and crude angle to explain some karmic phenomena, while maintaining an attitude of indifference to the true reality of cosmic life.

The Three Levels of Channeling and Autonomy

Generally speaking, psychics (also known as “channels”) can be divided into three levels. One is a state of being possessed without self-control, and forgetting the experience afterward. Another state is also being “borrowed” without self-control, but the person being borrowed is very clear about the entire process. The third level is being able to choose whether to be borrowed or to simply relay the needs of some spiritual entities. In general understanding, the last state is considered the best, because it means the psychic has effective self-control and autonomy. The first two phenomena, having already lost self-control, require more cultivation and training. However, many people like to seek out those psychics who lack autonomy, believing that the messages are not filtered by the psychic’s interface. But it is worth noting—if the psychic’s own quality is poor, they will not be able to get support from “better” deities either!

The Vessel-Level of the Psychic

The information bodies in the formless realm also have different levels, higher and lower. Generally, a psychic will connect to different spiritual entities depending on their personal cultivation state and mental/emotional development. If the psychic themselves has a deep foundation in cosmic life or religious philosophy, they will form a good “vessel” and connect with high-level spiritual entities from the information realm. They can then articulate profound philosophies of the universe and life to assist the world or help expand human consciousness.

Moreover, such high-level spiritual cultivators usually do not easily talk about trivial matters of supernatural phenomena. They only give key hints regarding personal cultivation issues and the principles of the universe and life. However, most people in the world are only busy with their personal livelihoods. Therefore, psychics of this (sensational) nature, ironically, are more likely to become famous than the high-level cultivators. It can only be said to be a pity, and a pity again.
