Duì: The Joyous (Lake). Success. Perseverance is favorable. Lakes resting one on the other: the image of the Joyous. Thus the superior man joins with his friends for discussion and practice.

Do you feel a sense of lightness lately, or are you in a period of frequent social interaction and sharing? “Duì” represents two lakes joined together, their waters mutually nourishing. It speaks of “joy” and “speech.” Authentic joy is not a fleeting sensory high but a state of internal fullness expressed through external gentleness. This is a reminder: true pleasure stems from sincere sharing and resonance.
Psychologically, this is a lesson in “social needs” and “emotional contagion.” When we connect with others, joy is amplified. Duì teaches us to “join with friends for discussion,” meaning to improve the quality of life through meaningful exchange. Have you lost yourself in superficial social noise (line 3)? Or have you fallen for false praise (line 5)? Real joy is “harmonious joyousness” (line 1)—a peace that radiates from the soul without ulterior motives. When you stop speaking merely to please others, your words regain their true power.
Practice “authentic expression.” In your interactions, do not fear showing vulnerability and do not be stingy with encouragement. The “deliberating joyousness” (line 4) symbolizes hesitation among choices, yet as long as you hold to integrity, this unease transforms into happiness. Trust that when your heart is stable and warm, you become a clear spring that nourishes yourself and attracts others to drink with you. Guard that pure happiness.
Laozi said: “Music and dainties will make the passing guest stop.” Duì is this natural power of attraction. Modern life chases constant “thrills,” leading to deeper emptiness. Taoism teaches that the highest joy is “joy without pleasure”—a mind free of burdens and quiet within. Do not argue over right and wrong; learn to “soften the light and become one with the dust.” When you stop striving for happiness, the effortless peace that arises is the only true joy that can never be taken away.
