Kun (Oppression): I Ching Tarot Insights

Kun: Oppression (Exhaustion). Success. Perseverance. The great man brings good fortune. No blame. When one has something to say, it is not believed. The lake is without water: the image of Exhaustion. Thus the superior man stakes his life on following his will.

Oppression

Oppression (Kun)

Do you feel exhausted lately, as if no matter how hard you try, people don’t understand you, and your words fall on deaf ears? “Kun” represents a lake without water—a dry bed where life struggles to survive. This symbolizes the depletion of resources and a period of isolation, testing the very core of your will.

Psychologically, this is a process of “purifying the persona.” When external supports—money, reputation, or social networks—vanish, what remains of you? The hexagram notes that “one is not believed,” advising that explanation is currently futile. This is a time of forced internal focus. Can you endure this solitude without desperately seeking outside validation? Oppression isn’t meant to destroy you, but to filter out the superficial, leaving only your authentic essence.

Practice “silence.” This is not surrender; it is preserving the integrity of your soul. When you stop wasting energy complaining about the environment and instead quietly guard your principles, your vitality condenses into a resilient inner core. Trust that the greatest resolve is often forged when there is nowhere else to turn. Hold your ground until the tide returns.

Laozi said: “He who knows that he has enough is rich.” To Taoism, Kun is an opportunity to find joy regardless of circumstance. When the water dries up, the lake bed is still the lake. Modern life fears “collapse,” but Zhuangzi suggests this is simply nature giving you a chance to be “empty.” Since the environment has restricted you, let go of useless attachments and find peace in simplicity. When you no longer fear lack, nothing can truly oppress you.
