Li: The Clinging. Perseverance furthers. It brings success. Care of the cow brings good fortune. That which is bright rises twice: the image of Fire. Thus the great man, by perpetuating this brightness, illumines the four quarters of the world.

Do you feel a strong urge to cling to someone or something to validate your worth? Or perhaps you are in an emotional peak—brilliant and radiant, yet prone to anxiety and exhaustion? “Li” represents fire. While fire provides light and warmth, it cannot exist without fuel to cling to. This is the wisdom of “attachment” and “clarity.”
Psychologically, this is a lesson in boundaries and healthy attachment. We often think independence means needing no one, but Li teaches us that life is inherently interdependent. The question is: what are you clinging to? If you depend on external praise or unstable relationships, you risk a sudden, destructive “burnout.” The inner child seeking warmth needs fuel that is steady, gentle, and nourishing.
Practice observing your patterns of attachment. When emotions are high, ask yourself: is my light coming from internal clarity or am I consuming my vitality? The hexagram suggests that “care of the cow brings good fortune,” symbolizing a receptive, gentle nurturing. Do not rush to burn out; find the forces that sustain you. When you align with right principles, your wisdom will shine enduringly.
Laozi said: “Know the masculine, but keep to the feminine.” Li is the art of radiance. Modern life obsesses over “highlight moments,” yet fire dies without wood. Taoism suggests being the steady, warm light rather than the wild fire that burns out quickly. Cling to the Tao, to the natural way of things. When you stop striving to show how bright you are, your spirit achieves true clarity and freedom.
