Pi: Standstill. Evil people do not further the perseverance of the superior man. The great departs, the small approaches. Heaven and earth do not unite: the image of Standstill. Thus the superior man falls back upon his inner worth in order to escape the difficulties.

Have you ever felt that no matter how hard you try to communicate, you are simply not being heard? “Pi” represents a state of total disconnection and isolation. Heaven ascends while Earth descends; they move in opposite directions, symbolizing a profound emotional rift.
Drawing this card suggests a period of stifling obstruction. In relationships, this manifests as “the silent treatment” or a complete breakdown in understanding. Your inner drive (Heaven) wants to rise, but external reality (Earth) pulls you down. This misalignment can lead to deep self-doubt and the urge to shut down entirely.
Now is not the time to force a breakthrough. The hexagram advises falling back upon your inner worth. Instead of exhausting yourself for those who do not understand you, turn inward and nurture your own soul. Trust that this stagnation is temporary. By maintaining your integrity during this period of “non-union,” you prepare for the moment when the tide will finally turn.
Laozi noted that “the greatest form has no shape.” Standstill might seem like dead water, but Taoism sees it as a perfect training ground. Since the environment offers no response, you are free to retreat into your inner world. While modern life fears silence, Zhuangzi believed that only in profound stillness can one see the true essence of all things. Do not contend or force. Use this cosmic buffer period to find joy in your own presence.
