Rider-Waite (Primary): The Process of Experience / Zen Tarot (Auxiliary): Guidance for the Soul
XIII – Death
This card is the “Actual Display” of your current situation. “Death” in Rider-Waite is the most misunderstood but most direct card. It represents “Inevitable Endings” and “Radical Change.” A skeleton riding a white horse tramples over kings and commoners alike, showing this is an ending you cannot negotiate but only accept. On a practical level, this indicates a phase (job, relationship, old pattern) has completely ended, and you must let go to welcome the sunrise (rebirth) in the distance.
Due to copyright issues, BJD Tarot is used to replace Rider-Waite

| Area | Upright (Good: Ending/Rebirth) | Reversed (Bad/Warning: Delay/Fear) |
|---|---|---|

| Career | Resignation, being fired (turning point), end of a project, company closing, total career change, ending old partnerships. | Staying when you should leave, resisting transition, holding on to obsolete positions, enduring exploitation out of fear. |
| Academic | End of a stage (e.g., graduation), complete failure of old study methods (must change), transferring schools. | Refusing to change ineffective methods, resisting graduation or moving to the next stage, delaying graduation. |
| Friendship | End of friendship, cutting ties with old circle, going separate ways. | Clinging to toxic friendships, resisting natural changes in social circles, unable to accept friends leaving. |
| Cooperation | Termination of contract, splitting up, liquidation of assets, ending loss-making projects, complete restructuring. | Forcing a dead partnership, fear of risks after splitting, dragging things out. |
| Wealth | Cutting losses (stop-loss), debt restructuring, ending losing investments, rebirth after bankruptcy. | Refusing to stop losses leading to greater loss, holding on to unprofitable assets, delaying financial crisis resolution. |

Zen = Manifesting simplicity. No judgment of emotions and desires. Return to purity.
Zen Observation: 13 Death
Only through a great death can there be a great rebirth. Death is not an end, but a transformation. Like fallen leaves nourishing new shoots, the old self must die for new life to be born. Do not resist the ending; that is merely the fear of impermanence. Cut off relationships, habits, and attachments that no longer serve you. This is a thorough cleansing, returning life to emptiness. Upon the ruins, spring grass will grow. Embrace this transition and trust the metabolism of the universe.
