Kui (Opposition): I Ching Tarot Insights

Kui: Opposition. In small matters, good fortune. Above, fire; below, the lake: the image of Opposition. Thus amid all objects of diversity the superior man maintains his individuality.

Opposition (Kui)

Do you feel out of step with those around you lately? It seems that no matter how hard you try to communicate, others are simply on a different wavelength. “Kui” represents “opposition” and “estrangement.” Fire moves upward, while the lake water moves downward—their directions are fundamentally opposed. This symbolizes alienation in relationships or a conflict between inner values.

Psychologically, this is a lesson in “individuation” and “projection.” We often fear conflict and demand conformity, but Kui reminds us that opposition does not mean destruction. Often, what we find “unbearable” in others is a projection of a shadow within ourselves that we cannot accept. The image of “a wagon full of ghosts” describes the illusions born of suspicion and prejudice. Can you practice seeing the truth behind these divergences? Difference is what defines who you are.

Practice accepting the reality of being misunderstood. There is no need to rush to convince others or demand approval from the majority. Seek consensus in small matters, but maintain your individuality in the large ones. When you stop viewing disagreement as an attack and see it as an opportunity for mutual reflection, conflict transforms into deep insight. Trust that despite all diversity, there is a fundamental ground where everything can coexist.

Laozi said: “Being and non-being create each other; difficult and easy complement each other.” Kui teaches you to see through the illusion of opposition. While fire and water do not mix, the world is incomplete without either. Taoism suggests the wisdom of “harmony in diversity.” Do not obsess over who is right or wrong. It is natural for directions to differ. When you release the rigid attachment to sameness, you find beauty in contradiction and live with greater freedom.
