Back in 2013, through a business partnership, I was introduced to a spiritual painting workshop. It was a three-day course, and I genuinely enjoyed it. There\u2019s an infant spirit attached to you!&#8221; I was stunned. &#8220;No, not at all. You must be mistaken,&#8221; I replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation became incredibly awkward. She insisted that an unborn soul was surrounding me. To give her an out and end the tension, I said, &#8220;Maybe I just wanted a child so much when I was younger that I attracted one?&#8221; She thought that was likely and warmly advised me to take care of it. I agreed, did some research on my own, and eventually forgot all about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six months later, the teacher returned to Taiwan. The organizer invited me back, offering a discount and suggesting I host a small crystal event there. Since I liked the painting aspect, I put my work aside and joined again. However, this time was different. The teacher had added a lot of Hindu chanting and deliverance concepts that had nothing to do with painting. I didn&#8217;t mind at the time and joined in for fun. But strangely, my painting became increasingly murky. It lacked the vibrant energy of my previous work; it just looked chaotic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the second day, the teacher came by to critique my work. Her face turned pale. &#8220;Your painting is terrifying,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t realize your soul was so dark.&#8221; Looking at the canvas, I had to admit it looked bizarre. But I figured if the painting helped release some unknown darkness from within, that was a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the energy in the room felt heavy, as if a thin fog was hanging there, making me feel drowsy. The teacher intensified the rituals and chants, and the way she looked at me became increasingly strange and blunt. By the end of the three days, I was exhausted. I just wanted to take my painting and go home to sleep. The room and the artwork itself felt draining\u2014I felt as tired as if I had just completed a three-day athletic competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right after class, I received a call from a Buddhist friend who was obsessed with performing &#8220;deliverance rituals.&#8221; She insisted she had to see me immediately. We agreed to meet the next evening at 9:00 PM. She brought along a colleague who was also heavily into rituals. I invited them into my studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, something bizarre happened. The moment these two friends entered, an array of strange, invisible forces seemed to erupt from my painting. My small studio felt instantly overcrowded. I must emphasize: before they arrived, I had been alone in the studio for hours, cleaning crystals and organizing files with the new painting on the wall, and everything had been perfectly calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This shift terrified the two Buddhists, as they could sense it too. Being someone who often encounters weird things, I just felt that things had become troublesome. I tried to calm them down, but they were so shaken they were afraid to drive home and insisted on staying until dawn. I hate staying up late, but I had no choice but to comply. To soothe them, I started talking about crystals to distract them. I knew that if their fear continued, their thoughts would warp the energy of the studio further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, they each picked out two crystals, claiming they felt better while wearing them, and said they wanted to buy them. One of them even clutched a tray of my freshly cleaned crystals all night to feel safe. The friend who called me said that when my workshop ended, she saw my image through her &#8220;Third Eye.&#8221; Her intuition told her I was in trouble. She believed the problem stemmed from that strange painting and demanded to take it to the Dizhuang Temple in Xinzhuang to be ritualistically burned. I didn&#8217;t hesitate; I cut the painting out of its frame and handed it to her. To me, it was just a painting\u2014I could always paint another one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At dawn, they left with the crystals and my painting. I was so exhausted I crashed immediately. An hour or two later, the friend called to say many strange things happened on the way to the temple. I was too tired to listen. Once I finally woke up and restored my studio, she called again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, she accused me of using &#8220;strange tactics&#8221; to manipulate them into buying the crystals and demanded a refund. I was furious. I had stayed up all night to comfort them, and I had even given up my painting just to appease their rituals. Why would I need a &#8220;trick&#8221; to sell a few crystals? The logic was absurd. I told them to return the crystals immediately and never come back. I refused to deal with people who couldn&#8217;t take responsibility for their own perceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That evening, she brought the crystals back but said, &#8220;Even if I don&#8217;t buy the crystals, I still want to be friends.&#8221; I shouted at her to never return, right in front of the security guard. She then said, &#8220;Because we are ordinary people, and you don&#8217;t seem afraid, it feels strange. It felt safe in your studio, but the drive back was terrifying. I feel like something is wrong, but I want to stay your friend.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my anger, I simply drove her away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later, her Buddhist Master came to visit me. When I mentioned the incident, the Master said, &#8220;That disciple has followed me for a long time. If she said something was wrong, she truly meant it. Don&#8217;t you believe her?&#8221; I replied, &#8220;Yes, things were definitely happening when she arrived, I won&#8217;t deny that. But my studio was fine before she got there, and it was fine after she left. So you tell me, was that her problem or mine? She was scared to death, while I wasn&#8217;t, because I knew I hadn&#8217;t done anything wrong. So how do we settle this account? Perhaps you should look more closely at what is really going on with her.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Master was left speechless. That was the end of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking back, it was just one of those bizarre troubles\u2014a way for the universe to declutter my friendships. Those religious zealots who love to meddle but refuse to take responsibility are a massive headache. In the end, everyone has their specialty. Those obsessed with rituals should be guided by qualified masters.
